My second guitar teacher was one of those teachers you like, but only appreciate in retrospect. At age fifteen I was considered to be mature enough to join the early academic project, (combining high school with courses at the academy for music) but I was in fact way to busy with friends and irrelevant things to appreciate the honor.My teacher was an old man, a little strange. The man was quite short and plump, and the knitted, knee-long vests in shades of dark green didn't add to his appeal. I think I remember him having this strange coiffure like a French monk, always walking around with tons of small change in his pockets to use for the copy machine and a green thermos with coffee to get him through the day. He would drink his coffee from the plastic cup attached to the thermos, together with the white bread-and-butter sandwiches his wife would fix him in the morning. I do not think people make each other sandwiches any more.Hans van Gogh was my teacher's name, and I could call him Hans. His way of teaching was meticulous, taking each small detail into consideration; the weight of your hand, how gravity pulls it down, how each finger is in a complete balance, how you move the wrist from one position to another. I was young and impatient, and didn't understand why we had to do all these annoying exercises, why couldn't we just play difficult pieces like I saw students of other teachers do.Years later I came to appreciate his quiet stubbornness and patience, after being screamed at more then once by so-called maestro's who teach mainly to support their own ego at the expense of their pupils. Without adding any knowledge that will last longer than the length of the lesson.The other day someone told me that the gift of education is the greatest gift one can give, and he is right. So I deal with my pupils, so preoccupied with their friends and irrelevant things. And I insist, with patience and stubbornness on the little things; the movement of a wrist, the feeling of a musical phrase. Those little things that I hope will last a lifetime.
